Astronomy and Astrophysics from Antarctica

چکیده
The Antarctic plateau is a new frontier for astronomy, offering superior observing conditions to those of any other groundbased site across most of the electromagnetic spectrum. The established inland Antarctic stations of Amundsen-Scott and Vostok are now being joined by new stations at Dome A, Dome C and Dome F. Plans to deploy large telescopes are already well advanced, and within a decade some of astronomy’s most capable facilities could be located on the frozen continent.

The Effect of Solar Particles in the Choice of Alloy Shielding in a Satellite
The damages and logical failures in dierent parts of a satellite may occur during a solar event, when a bulk of solar energetic particles approaching the Earth. During solar events, these particles may cause extensive damages which are even permanent (hard errors). A way of damage reduction is designing a proper coating as the fuselage. As protons are the major component of solar particles and ...
متن کاملINFRARED ASTRONOMY AT THE SOUTH POLE: A Report to the OIR Panel of the Decadal Committee for Astronomy and Astrophysics
The mission of CARA, the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica, is to explore and exploit the unique conditions at the geographic South Pole and to lay the foundation for an ongoing national observatory. A small prototype user-facility instrument has demonstrated that very sensitive imaging in the thermal infrared can be routinely performed at the South Pole. The site should be furthe...
متن کاملAstronomy & Astrophysics An analysis of temperatures and wind speeds above Dome C , Antarctica
A good astronomical site must fulfill several criteria including low atmospheric turbulence and low wind speeds. It is therefore important to have a detailed knowledge of the temperature and wind conditions of a location considered for future astronomical research. Antarctica has unique atmospheric conditions that have already been exploited at the South Pole station. Dome C, a site located on ...
